Roberson Homestead - McClain County, Oklahoma

This photo is of the Roberson homestead about 2 miles NW of Byars, McClain County, Oklahoma.  The author took this picture on a trip through the area in August 1978.  He was given directions to the location by Mason Roberson, still living in Byars - grandson of George W. Roberson.

This picture is taken at the corner of the intersection of two roads.   According to the story pieced together by the author, the Pugh family lived just up the road from here.  Due to a number of misunderstandings that were obviously not resolved, the Roberson family told the Pugh family they could not come down the road any more past their house.  At the time, this was the direct route into town.

When Kirby violated this directive on Christmas Day, 1922, Carl Roberson shot and killed him.  Later the following spring in May 1923, Kirby Pugh's brother, Ralph, shot and killed George W. Roberson in retaliation.
